I know many of you are wondering whether or not it's legal to download these movies.
The short answer is: Yes!
All of the movies on this site are in the public domain. This means they are free for anyone to enjoy and use. In most cases, works of art enter the public domain when their copyrights expire, usualy a certain number of years after their release or after the death of the author/creator.
There are actually businesses on the internet who will sell you copies of these movies on DVD! This is legal not because they own the rights to the movies, but because no one does. I've made them freely available here, so that you can enjoy them without having to pay. If you prefer to watch them on DVD, you can buy them esewhere, but I thought I'd give you the option of getting them free.
